Camera and microphone access for our online events

Why can’t others see or hear me in the seminar room?

Our online events run through their own video channel, built directly into ereignis.no. For others to see and hear you, your system and your browser both need to grant permission to use your camera and microphone. Not every setup causes problems — but if yours does, this guide will help you fix it.

Check your browser first

Most browsers ask for camera and microphone permission the first time you try to use them on a particular website, but if you clicked “block” by accident, or joined once without a camera attached, you might need to fix this in your browser’s settings:

  1. Look for a small camera or padlock icon in the address bar, next to ereignis.no.
  2. Click it, and make sure Camera and Microphone are both set to Allow.
  3. Refresh the page and re-join the room.

The exact icon differs slightly by browser (Chrome and Edge use a camera icon; Firefox and Safari use a padlock; Vivaldi uses a shield), but the setting is always attached to the website, not to Zoom or any app — it isn’t the same as a permission you may have granted Zoom separately in the past, even if we use the same interface.

If that doesn’t fix it, check your operating system

Even with the site itself allowed to use the camera and mic in your browser, your operating system may still be blocking the browser from reaching your camera or microphone at all. Where to look:

  • Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone (and, separately, → Camera). Make sure both Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone (or the camera equivalents) are switched on for your browser.
  • macOS: Apple menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone (and, separately, → Camera). Make sure your browser is ticked in the list.
  • ChromeOS, Linux, Android and iOS have their own equivalents of this setting, usually under a similar Privacy or App Permissions section.
More help

For step-by-step instructions with screenshots for your particular device, Zoom has put together a thorough guide covering both browser and system permissions: camera and microphone permissions. It’s written for Zoom’s own browser-based app, but the same browser and system permissions apply to our video room too, since both work the same way under the hood.
