After Rilke: renderings, parodies, rejoinders and animadversions

utopos poetry #4

These English renderings offer a wide selection of Rilke’s New Poems (1907-8), ranging across many genres and reflecting the poet’s extraordinary gifts of inventiveness, depth, acute observation, and narrative power. They also make the case for translation as itself a matter of responding creatively to elements of the original that may call for active engagement of an exploratory, revisionist, dissenting, or sometimes parodic character. The effect is both challenging and capable of bringing new life to texts often worn smooth by over-familiarity.
