In this seminar we will work together to experience stone through discussions and close readings of philosophy, literature, and cultural geography and geology. Fundamentally, we will be asking the question of how, through an inquiry into the (non)human expressivities of stone, we might begin to re-orient our relations to the Earth here and now in the Anthropocene.

In our sessions, we will move through material related to:

  1. Writing Stone: Inscriptions + Field Notes
  2. The Shining of Stone: Beauty and the Manifestation of Truth
  3. The Poetics of Stone: Foundations, Tectonics, & Volcanoes
  4. The Politics of Stone: Granite, Colonization, and Oil
  5. The Transfigurations of Stone: Becoming Quartz
  6. And: Next Steps

Curiosity, a love of learning, and a willingness to read, to share in discussions, and, on occasion, to doodle or scribble.

All interested advanced undergraduates, MA and MS students, PhD candidates, and colleagues from universities or related organizations are welcome!
