Biography
Sotirios Bahtsetzis is an Associate Professor of Theory of Contemporary Art and Curatorial Practices in the Department of Culture, Creative Media and Industries at the University of Thessaly (Greece). His research lies at the intersection of art history, media theory, visual culture, semiotics, phenomenology, and curatorial studies. He has published extensively on installation art, exhibition-making as a medium, image theory, media archaeology and posthumanism, with particular attention to the work of Friedrich Kittler and Michel Foucault. Selected publications relevant to the lecture’s theme include The Time That Remains: How to Repeat the Avant-Garde (e-flux journal, no. 30, 2011) and The Time That Remains: On Contemporary Nihilism (e-flux journal, no. 28, 2011). His recent scholarship explores questions of visibility, dispositifs, image phenomenology, semiocapitalism, political economy, and the theological foundations of governance. He is the author of Chronopolitics and Topo-economies: Understanding the Present and Designing the Future (2024) and The Gender is the Medium: Gender Mediation in Marcel Duchamp’s Oeuvre (2025).
