Biography
Liv Tsim is an interdisciplinary artist, biomaterial designer, and researcher from Hong Kong. She is currently a PhD candidate at Northumbria University, working in collaboration with the Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment. Her research and creative practice explore the intersections of biofabrication, life-centred ecology, and situated knowledge, primarily through mixed-media installations and speculative projects. In recent years, Tsim has focused on microbial pigments and pattern formation, investigating how colour and texture can serve as a communicative language between humans and other living organisms. She believes that interdisciplinary collaboration can expand the boundaries of knowledge, articulate speculative visions, and foster the construction of a more inclusive future.
In 2023, Tsim received the CreateSmart Young Design Talent Special Award from the Hong Kong Design Centre, was awarded the Media Art Scholarship from the Department of Cultural Affairs in Salzburg, and was shortlisted for the 2023 Green Trail Awards LVMH Maison/0 CSM. Her works have been exhibited internationally, including Living Assembly: Building with Biology (London Design Biennale, 2025), Pioneering Biomaterials: Academia and Industry Convergence (Novack Gallery, San Francisco, 2024), Post-Human Narratives (Cattle Depot Artist Village and Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, Hong Kong, 2020–2022), Living with the Livings (Hypha Studio, London, 2024), #CreateCOP Exhibition (Shanghai Center of Photography, China, 2024), Art Central (Hong Kong, 2024), and Tokens of Remembrance (Galleria Myymälä2, Helsinki, 2024).
