Seven short lectures on silence
This lecture traces a journey through inflections and qualities of silence in relation to language and image, drawn from close observation of instances in Jon Fosse’s Septology and Nobel lecture A Silent Language, Henri Bergson’s sense of time and the sentence, Sarah Ruden’s new translation of the Gospels, the nonvocal songs of birds, the last lithograph by American artist Charles White, apophatic theology, a comic scene from a 1932 Laurel & Hardy film, and autobiographical associations that arise out of this constellation of case studies.
